MENOPAUSE
The Menopause is a time when there is a physiological shift that happen for us women and we experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms.
Sometimes we fear changes to our lives because we don’t know how to control them and often this is out of our hands. If however, we focus on what we can control we can lead healthier and happier lives. If we choose what we put into our body, on our body, how we use our body and what we put into our mind we can retain more of a handle on how we will lead the rest of our lives.
The Menopause is caused by a fall in the amount of the oestrogen hormone which is produced by the ovaries and signals the end of our fertile years. In Western women, it occurs on average at 51 years, but there’s a wide range extending from your 30s to 60s.
It’s a normal process our bodies go through as we age. Menopause describes the end of our reproductive period and any of the changes we go through either just before or just after we stop having our periods. The menopause occurs when the ovaries no longer respond to the controlling hormones released by the pituitary gland in the brain.
Menopause happens when the ovaries no longer release an egg every month and we stop having periods. As a woman we are born with a finite number of eggs which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries make the hormones estrogen and progesterone, and these control our ovulation and menstruation. As a result, the ovaries fail to release an egg each month
and to produce female sex hormones and the fall in the levels of these hormones in the bloodstream gives rise to the symptoms of menopause.
Many women experience symptoms of the menopause and irregular periods for several years up to the menopause itself. As the normal function of the ovaries decline we enter the climacteric, or ‘perimenopause’ phase. One of the common problems of the climacteric is that our periods can become erratic in their amount and spacing and this happens up until our periods stop, it can last for up to 20 years.
